Brent Hinds Caused the Crash that Took His Life, Police Report Reveals

Former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds was found at fault for the motorcycle crash that resulted in his death. This finding comes from a police report released by Atlanta News First.

The police report provided details about the incident and Hinds’ condition at the scene.

“Hinds was at fault for the crash,” the police report read.

The reporting officer also documented Hinds’ condition when emergency responders arrived at the scene.

“At the moment I arrived on scene [Hinds] was breathing and moving with visible injuries to his head, arms and torso,” the officer wrote in the report. “He was transported … to Grady [Memorial Hospital] where he perished from his injuries.”

The tragic accident marks the end of a significant chapter in progressive metal history. Hinds had been instrumental in shaping the genre’s evolution over more than two decades.

Q945 All Rock reported that Hinds was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle when a BMW SUV failed to yield while making a turn, leading to the fatal collision. The accident occurred in Atlanta, the city where Hinds had created much of his influential music career and established himself as a prominent figure in the metal scene.

Hinds co-founded Mastodon in 2000 and had been with the band for 25 years before announcing his departure earlier in 2025. Music Radar noted that his work significantly contributed to the distinctive sound of progressive metal, marked by his virtuosic guitar style and innovative approach that blended sludgy riffs with fluid leads.

Beyond Mastodon, Hinds showcased his musical versatility through various side projects. Wikipedia documented that he had been active in other musical endeavors such as Fiend Without a Face and West End Motel, demonstrating his ability to explore different musical territories while maintaining his signature style.

The loss of Hinds represents a significant blow to the progressive metal community, where his innovative guitar work and creative vision had influenced countless musicians and helped define the genre’s modern sound. His contributions to Mastodon’s acclaimed albums and his individual artistic pursuits had established him as one of the most respected guitarists in heavy music.
