Bonnie Raitt Says Prince Asked Her To Teach Him How To Play Slide
Bonnie Raitt recently joined Apple Music’s Zane Lowe for an interview and revealed that Prince approached her to show him how to play slide guitar.
In 1986, Bonnie Raitt began working with Prince at his Paisley Park estate on several songs. Although these songs were never released, Raitt and Prince stayed in touch in the following years. At that time, Prince was a pretty talented multi-instrumentalist. However, Raitt knew a guitar technique that Prince didn’t know about, the slide guitar.
In a recent interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Bonnie Raitt remembered the time she worked with Prince. She stated that Prince didn’t know how to play the slide guitar, and he sampled some of her slides in his song ‘Cream.’ According to the musician, she was the one who showed Prince how to do it.
Moreover, Raitt stated that Prince told her he didn’t need to learn the slide guitar because he could sample her playing. She then recalled that she and Prince had no chance of working together without interruption because they weren’t available at the same time. So, Prince made the tracks in his key or worked on songs he had already written.
According to Raitt, when they found a break and came together to work on the music material, the tracks Prince came up with ended up being too low for her. However, Prince asked her to play slide on some of the tracks and went on asking her to teach him the slide guitar technique.
In the interview with Apple Music‘s Zane Lowe, Bonnie Raitt recalled the following about Prince:
“He sampled some of my slide on ‘Cream.’ I just showed him how I do it. So I got the feeling he said, ‘I don’t necessarily have to learn how to do this because I can just sample you.’
Our time together was aborted somewhat because of scheduling. I couldn’t make it when he was available, so he went ahead and made the tracks in his key, or they were songs he’d already written.
So when I got out there, and we had a couple of days to try some things, they were way too low for me, but he wanted me to play slide on some stuff, and he wanted me to teach him how to do it.”
