Smashing Pumpkins has been on the road with Jane’s Addiction for their Spirits On Fire Tour. After Perry Farrell, who had to cancel five shows due to an injury following the Madison Square Garden show, the Pumpkins also canceled a date because Billy Corgan had to consult a voice doctor.
The spirits On Fire tour ended up being hindered by several unfortunate incidents. Jane’s Addiction’s Dave Navarro couldn’t perform with the band due to his struggles with COVID-19, and Troy Van Leeuwen replaced him for the remainder of the tour. However, this wasn’t the only thing affecting the tour’s schedule.
More recently, in October, Perry Farrell canceled shows in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City due to an injury he suffered following the concert at Madison Square. Sadly, Smashing Pumpkins was also forced to cancel the show in Portland because Billy Corgan suffers from laryngitis, which is the inflammation of the voice box.
“It’s with great disappointment that tonight’s show in Portland, OR, has been canceled due to laryngitis,” Smashing Pumpkins announced on Twitter. “William, Jimmy, James, and Jeff are deeply saddened, but this decision was not made easily and was far beyond their control. They look forward to returning to you all next summer. Refunds will be available at your point of purchase.”
Shortly after the news, Billy Corgan took to his Twitter to post a picture of himself visiting the doctor’s office. In the picture, the singer is smiling while making a thumbs-up gesture, probably trying to put their fans’ minds at ease. “At the voice doctor,” wrote Billy Corgan in the caption. “Lots of love.”
While laryngitis often goes away within one or two weeks, it remains unknown whether Corgan will manage to recover and keep up with the rest of the dates, as tickets for the upcoming shows are still purchasable. However, as the announcement says, the band won’t get on the stage until next summer.
