Black Veil Brides’ frontman Andy Biersack recently explained how he accidentally sparked a beef with Sleep Token fans. He addressed the situation in a statement shared on Jesea Lee.

The explanation came in response to a question about his unexpected conflict with the fanbase. When asked “What was your beef with Sleep Token fans?”, Biersack clarified the humorous misunderstanding that led to the controversy.

“My current very funny accidental beef with Sleep Token fans. This is very funny. I didn’t mean to. I like Sleep Token. I don’t understand how this happened,” Biersack said.

He went on to describe the incident that started it all. The incident occurred during a show in Atlanta.

“A couple nights ago, we’re in Atlanta and it was just the silliest little thing. There’s a couple in the front row in the pit and the girl having the best time ever singing along. And the guy has a very upset look on his face,” he explained. “And he’s wearing a Sleep Token shirt. So I go up to him, just making a joke and I go, ‘Look, I’m not picking on you, but I noticed that you’re wearing a Sleep Token shirt. Would it help you enjoy the experience if I told you we actually are Sleep Token?’ It was silly. He laughed. We moved on with the show.”

However, the joke took on a life of its own in the following days.

“The next week of my life is, I mean, I’m talking I have a meeting with our Universal Music Group representatives. And the first thing in the meeting was, ‘Ah, I saw that Sleep Token video. It’s really funny.’ And then I see the comments and it’s f*cking people losing their shit going like, ‘You couldn’t possibly be Sleep Token. You’re not talented enough. F*ck you!'” Biersack continued.

Rather than backing down from the backlash, Biersack admitted he decided to lean into the controversy.

“So the only choice I have is to double down. So now every night I’m talking about it,” he said.

The incident highlights the passionate nature of modern metal fandoms. It also shows the way social media can amplify even the smallest interactions between artists and audiences.

Sleep Token has cultivated one of the most devoted online fanbases in contemporary metal. Their followers are particularly active on platforms like TikTok, Reddit, and X. The band’s mysterious, masked presentation and complex lore have created an intensely loyal community that often reacts strongly when they perceive their favorite artists being mocked or dismissed. This dedicated following has become known for their deep speculation around the band’s symbolic storytelling and anonymous identity. This makes them particularly sensitive to comments from other musicians.

The musical differences between Black Veil Brides and Sleep Token also contribute to the cultural divide that fueled this controversy. Black Veil Brides are rooted in glam-metal, metalcore, and theatrical hard rock traditions. Sleep Token blends alternative metal, progressive metal, R&B, pop, and atmospheric production with a heavily ritualistic presentation. These stylistic differences represent broader generational and aesthetic divisions within the metal community. Fans often view their preferred subgenres as distinct artistic territories.

Social media dynamics played a crucial role in escalating what began as a simple stage banter moment. Modern controversies in the music world typically spread through short video clips, quote-posts, and reaction videos that can strip context from original statements. When artists make offhand comments that fans interpret as disrespectful, the controversy often grows exponentially across multiple platforms. This growth is driven by passionate fan communities rather than official exchanges between the bands themselves.

The situation also reflects how quickly casual interactions can become major talking points in today’s interconnected music landscape. What started as a lighthearted moment between Biersack and a fan wearing a Sleep Token shirt evolved into a topic significant enough to be discussed in meetings with Universal Music Group representatives. This demonstrates the outsized impact that social media reactions can have on artists’ professional lives.
