ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons Reveals Little-Known Fact About Lynyrd Skynyrd

During a conversation about their upcoming tour, ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons shared an interesting tidbit with Axs TV. While browsing the blues section of a record store, Gibbons shared a story about how he provided Lynyrd Skynyrd with their first paying gig. The frontman revealed:

“A little-known fact. ZZ Top actually provided the first paying job that allowed Lynyrd Skynyrd to join us on some crazy tour way back when. Don’t forget there’s still some of this sound to be heard on the live stage. ZZ Top joining forces with Lynyrd Skynyrd, we put together a crazy package called the ‘Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour.’ Can’t miss that. And what we plan to do is bring something nice and loud, so come on out.”

Gibbons mentioned another name, who seems to be his close friend. He continued:

“And I think if you look real close, some other pals of mine, my good buddy Josh, leading the charge with none other than Queens Of The Stone Age. They’ve got so much recorded material. I was actually able to go to Joshua Tree. To meet Josh at Joshua Tree, what a combination.”

The frontman went on to talk about Homme’s band and added:

“The recording sessions for a Queens Of The Stone Age, the studio is at the end of a dirt road it’s in an old converted house. We were getting deep into it out there in the desert. They do it and do it right, you never really know what’s coming at you. They’ll hit you from all sides.”

Not only is ZZ Top embarking on a tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd, but they also paid tribute to the band at the CMT Awards alongside other names like Slash, Warren Haynes, and Paul Rodgers.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is touring to celebrate its 50th anniversary. They and ZZ Top will be teaming up for the Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour from July to September, with dates scheduled throughout the tour. See the dates here.
