Youtube Report Shows Rock Is The Third Most-Streamed Genre
Vibrate’s recently published study, examining several data from social media and streaming platforms, revealed the most-streamed genres. Also, Youtube’s report proves that rock has just started reclaiming the throne and surpassing other genres.
Rock music is one of the few genres with many subgenres that have turned into subcultures and inspired their era’s youth and lifestyles. Alternative rock, hard rock, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, punk rock, and many more preserved the genre’s popularity and commercial success through bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Queen, Nirvana, Metallica, and Iron Maiden and their legendary records.
However, with time, rock music started to lose its popularity after the rise of pop and hip-hop music. Thus, KISS’ Gene Simmons claimed that ‘rock music is dead‘ and explained the reasons behind it. However, several contemporary and older rockstars disagreed with him. According to Simmons, file-sharing and streaming are the murder weapons that kill both rock music and potential rock musicians who can’t work on their materials because of financial struggles.
In addition, Vibrate’s recent reports about music genres and their streaming percentages on Youtube showed that rock music started to become more and more popular again. The rising stars were the Eurovision winner band Måneskin, which got more than 200 million views on the platform last year, Mitski, and Tom Grennan. Rock is currently the third most-streamed genre on Youtube, following pop and hip-hop. It was enlisted as fourth on Spotify and TikTok.
