Why Gary Rossington’s Cause Of Death Will Remain A Secret, Rickey Medlock Explains

On March 6, Gary Rossington, the final surviving member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, passed away. The reason for his passing has not yet been disclosed, and during a recent interview with Northwest Arkansas, guitarist Rickey Medlock explained why the cause of Rossington’s death needed to be kept a secret. He said:

“Well, I think the family would like to… I don’t think they are ever gonna release anything out of respect. For them, it was common knowledge known that Gary had undergone a lot of heart issues and that he had heart disease.”

He added:

“I’m sure that we just look at it as he used to come to that, and there’s been no official report released that we like to pretty well much keep it that way, you know.”

The frontman was one of the survivors of the band’s plane crash, causing the death of Ronnie Van Zant, siblings Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines, and three others.

In 2015, Rossington suffered a heart attack and was advised by doctors in 2018 to stop touring for 15 years. Though Rossington suffered from heart issues, he still played shows until February. Looking back to the singer’s heart issues, the cause of death is considered a heart attack.
