The Time James Hetfield Mocked Axl Rose And His Gig Requirements

James Hetfield, the legendary frontman of the thrash metal legend, Metallica, teased Guns N’ Roses‘ frontman Axl Rose‘s gig requirement list in an interview with Triple M done back in 2011. Hetfield’s reaction to Axl Rose’s requirements was both amusing and mocking.

As many of you may know, Metallica and Guns N’ Roses have a long history together. In 1992, the two bands had launched a tour together under the name of Guns N’ Roses/Metallica Stadium Tour. Guns N’ Roses were promoting their albums ‘Use Your Illusion I & II’, while Metallica was promoting their fifth studio album ‘Metallica’.

The notorious tour had multiple series of unfortunate events from James Hetfield having second to third-degree burns all over his body to Axl Rose walking off the stage, leaving all the fans unsatisfied. What started out to be a big promotion for both bands brought about a kind of bad blood between the pair.

In the interview done almost ten years ago, the Triple M interviewer handed Hetfield a list of Axl Rose’s requirements for Guns N’ Roses’ gig. As James Hetfield read the list he was amused by the fact that Rose had time to sleep during the tour. Hetfield also added that he did not have anything against the Guns N’ Roses frontman.

The interviewer asked Hetfield:

“You know, Axl is heading down here. He’s gonna do a gig. If you watch the car ride, you get to see his band kind of as an added bonus. What do you think about this setup?”

To which, Hetfield answers mockingly saying:

“I like cars. You know I got nothing against Roses. I mean he’s doing what he’s doing at this point. I don’t know if there is much guns or roses in any of that but it’s Axl. He has not changed or waned one bit, you know. And I kind of respect that.”

After that, the interviewer hands out the requirement list to Hetfield. Here is what he said in return:

“Champagne, vodka, tequila, red wine, and beer. A bed? That’s pretty amazing. So, he sleeps at the gig. He’s got cheese on here. It’s kind of- you know might stop you up, Axl. And then jam and condiments. Well, don’t read ours.”
