The Singer David Gilmour Hired To Sing Roger Waters’ Vocal Parts

The successful Pink Floyd guitarist and songwriter David Gilmour kickstarted his career with Pink Floyd before pursuing a successful solo career. In the first ten years of the band’s career, they became internationally known and one of the highest-selling artists of all time by selling more than 250 million albums worldwide. The band’s iconic member Roger Waters quit the band dramatically in 1985 which was a departure followed by lawsuits.

Pink Floyd continued as a band until 2014, and David Gilmour took the leadership into his hands. He thought that under Waters’ influence, the band had focused more on lyrics rather than music, and decided to change that. Only three albums were released after Waters left, ‘A Momentary Lapse of Reason,’ ‘The Division Bell,’ and ‘The Endless River.’ The band broke up several times to later reunite, but their 2014 break up seems to be the final one so far.

However, David Gilmour didn’t stop making music and continued to perform on his own. Hiring musicians to accompany him on stage, he continued to sing Pink Floyd songs in his shows. One of his most successful shows was surely ‘Live at Pompeii’ which became a completion film documenting his 2015-2016 tour for his album, ‘Rattle That Rock.’ On the tour, he performed Pink Floyd songs such as ‘Wish You Were’ and ‘Comfortably Numb.’

Who Sang Roger Waters’ Parts In ‘Comfortably Numb?’

‘Comfortably Numb’ was first released in Pink Floyd’s legendary album, ‘The Wall’ in 1979. The lyrics were written by Roger Waters while the music was composed by David Gilmour. It’s recognized for its remarkable guitar solo and was ranked number 314 in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list.

The jazz-rock singer Chuck Leavell helped Gilmour perform ‘Comfortably Numb’ in ‘Live at Pompeii’ and co-led the song with Gilmour. Leavell is mainly known for being the keyboardist of The Allman Brothers. He was also a session musician of The Rolling Stones on their every album from 1982 except for ‘Bridges to Babylon.’

Gilmour took advantage of Leavell’s vocal and musical powers in 2015-2016 when he made him the co-lead vocalist of ‘Comfortably Numb.’ The performance was posted on YouTube in 2017, and it has over 124 million views as of today. The fans commented how much they appreciate Gilmour still singing Pink Floyd songs and doing his best to give his audience an experience of a lifetime.
