Robert Smith On The New Cure Album’s Delay, ‘A Lot Of The Songs Are Difficult To Sing’

The Cure’s Robert Smith recently spoke to NME about the band’s upcoming album, saying the delay resulted from his difficulty singing some songs.

Apart from ‘Torn Down’ and ’40 Live: CURÆTION-25 + Anniversary,’ The Cure didn’t release any new material since their 2008 album titled ‘4:13 Dream.’ So, fans have been long waiting for a new record from the band. In 2019, Robert Smith implied there might be a new album, but they haven’t made any new releases that year.

In June 2021, The Cure announced the completion of two new albums. On March 3, Robert Smith joined CHVRCHES on the stage and received the award for Best Song by a UK Artist for their collaborative effort titled ‘How Not To Drown.’ Speaking at the BandLab NME Awards ceremony, Smith also touched upon the upcoming Cure albums.

Robert Smith stated that he finished working on the second one of the new Cure albums, and it will be titled ‘Songs Of A Lost World.’ Moreover, he hinted that the album would probably be released this fall, in September. In a more recent interview with NME, Smith updated fans on the album release.

The singer told NME that Reeves Gabrels came from America to finish the solos, and he needed to complete a couple of vocals. Saying that the album consists of twelve tracks, Smith said it’s half-finished and half-mixed. Moreover, it’s taken him a while to complete the album because several songs are challenging to sing.

Speaking to NME, Robert Smith said the following about the upcoming Cure album:

“Reeves Gabrels, our guitar player, has come over from America for the day to finish a couple of solos. I’ve got to finish a couple of vocals. Essentially it’s a 12-track album. It’s there. It’s half-mixed and half-finished. It’s a weird thing. It’s kind of evolved over the last two years. It hasn’t always been a good thing to have been left alone with it.

You pick at it, like picking at seams, and everything falls apart. It’ll be worth the wait. I think it’s the best thing we’ve done, but then I would say that. I’m not doing an Oasis when I say, ‘It’s the best fookin’ album.’ A lot of the songs are difficult to sing, and that’s why it’s taken me a while.”

According to Smith, though The Cure fans have been waiting for a new release for a long time, the new album will be worth the wait. Moreover, he excited the fans more by saying that it’s the best thing The Cure has done.
