Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic Recalls Brian May’s Help After Stage Accident

If the night was to end by sharing a glass of champagne with the Queen guitarist Brian May, a head injury might not be the worst thing to happen to someone, right? Just kidding, of course; it’s great that Nirvana bassist Kirst Novoselic wasn’t injured that badly when his Gibson fell on his head. Novoselic recently shared with Guitar World May’s kind treatment backstage after the accident at the 1992 MTV Awards.

“Oh, that was mega!” said Krist Novoselic, recalling the incident. “We started playing this song, and my amp just didn’t work. So I thought, ‘I’m gonna do this bass toss and walk off.’ Well, the bass got caught in the TV lights, and then boom! It fell on my head. So I storm off stage, and these paramedics come and take a look at me and put a bandage on, and I had to sign all these release forms, so I’m not going to sue anybody.”

The rocker recalled, “ It was in front of 200 million people, right? So I’m all annoyed, right, and I’m like, ‘What the hell!’ and behind them, there is this amazing fellow with a glass of champagne. It’s Brian May! Just standing there politely. He says, ‘Here you are, my good man,’ and hands me this glass of champagne.”

He continued, “I was like, ‘You’re Brian May! How are you?’ He said, ‘More importantly, how are you?’ Moments later, Dave Grohl burst in. He’d been looking all over for me, only to find me enjoying a calm glass of bubbly with Mr. May.”

The 1992 MTV Music Video Awards was a big night for Nirvana, as the band took home two awards for New Artist and Alternative Video for ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit.’ Despite Novoselics’s accident, it was still a memorable night for the bassist both due to May’s kind gesture and for going into rock history as one of the worst bass guitar throws. I guess you can’t win ’em all!
