Maynard James Keenan Doesn’t Want To Be A ‘Celebrity Rock Star’

Tool and Puscifer lead singer Maynard James Keenan recently joined an interview with The Arizona Republic and stated that he doesn’t prefer to be in the public eye like many other rock stars.

Every major city has a place in the music industry, but there is no doubt that the cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville offer much more opportunities for artists to promote their work. Their places of residence play a role in determining the venues they can play or the other musicians they can meet around. Thus, the musicians mostly prefer to live in the cities with a great music scene.

However, there are also other artists like Maynard James Keenan who choose to live in smaller cities. When his life in LA didn’t satisfy him anymore, the singer left there and moved to Jerome, Arizona. It seemed like a good place to him to pursue his other interests besides music. Keenan is also the owner and winemaker of Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards, located in the Arizona wine industry.

His decision to live in a small city like Jerome seems unusual, considering the other artists in the industry. Keenan opened up about it during his latest interview and explained that fame and being in the spotlight are what matters for most celebrity rock stars, yet they don’t interest him much. The singer knows that’s what they love, so he doesn’t criticize them, but it is not just a suitable lifestyle for him. Keenan revealed that this is one of the reasons why he decided to move to Jerome. He thinks he ‘operates better‘ in a small town.

Here is how Maynard James Keenan talked about fame:

“There are people in our industry who need the attention. They need to be upfront. They need to dance around. They like to be on the red carpet. They’ve just gotta be out there and be seen. And that’s no disrespect to them. That’s what they love. They love being celebrities, being rock stars. That’s not really how I’m wired. I’m just more wired for a small town. I operate better.”

Maynard James Keenan is getting ready to hit the road with Puscifer very soon. The band will perform across the US in June and July in support of their 2020 album, ‘Existential Reckoning.’ The tour will start on June 9, 2022, in Las Vegas and end in Seattle on July 10.
