Journey’s Deen Castronovo Picks Steve Perry As His ‘Vocal Hero’

April 2023 marked the release of Revolution Saints‘ latest album ‘Eagle Flight.’ Following its launch, Deen Castronovo took a moment to share thoughts about the album and his own career in an interview with Goldmine, giving the nod to Steve Perry.

In the development of the new record, Alessandro Del Vecchio played a part as the producer and keyboardist, maintaining his duties from the band’s previous three albums. Based on that fact, during his interview, the drummer acknowledged Del Vecchio’s contributions to Saints’ music and career.

His words about the producer read:

“Alessandro is our fourth member. If it wasn’t for him, there wouldn’t be a Revolution Saints. He writes the majority of the music. He is the brainchild of the group, along with Serafino Perugino of Frontiers Records. Us Italians work well together! I am not a songwriter. I don’t write lyrics. My words would be like ‘Sesame Street’ stuff. I have been a drummer all my life.”

Castronovo went on to disclose his own career by naming a few of his vocal influences, including Journey’s former vocalist and Ronnie James Dio, by saying:

“As the album progressed, Alessandro got to know me more and more, which helped with writing lyrics to fit me. I told him, ‘That’s me. My god, I lived that.’ He and Joel [Hoekstra] wrote songs for the album. Revolution Saints is a departure from Journey. I wanted to find my identity as a singer, and with this new album, ‘Eagle Flight,’ I think I am honing that in more. In addition to Steve Perry, my other vocal heroes are Ronnie James Dio and Paul Stanley.”
