Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh talked about his favorite guitar players during his recent interview with Long Distance and compared Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page to Jeff Beck, saying that the latter’s playing style is more extraordinary than Page.
As you probably know, Walsh has been pursuing a very successful career as a guitarist for more than fifty years. He received very positive reviews thanks to his guitar performance in James Gang, Eagles, and Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. The Eagles icon had a great influence on younger guitar players due to his unique guitar playing style.
Although he has achieved great fame, Walsh never forgets to credit his muses such as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, and Jeff Beck, who helped him create his own style. He met with most of these musicians during various tours and other strange encounters. Therefore, choosing his favorite guitar player was a challenging task for Walsh.
Walsh couldn’t name the best guitar player, but he knows who took the instrument to another level. Even though Walsh and Page have been friends for a long time, and he was the one who gave Jimmy Page his first Les Paul, he defined The Yardbirds’ Jeff Beck as the person who ‘has taken the guitar to another galaxy.’ He added that Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page are very talented and amazing guitarists as well.
Walsh said in his interview that:
“Sandy Nelson… I love Rykotki, I absolutely love Michael Hedges. I think Jeff Beck has taken the guitar to another galaxy. It’s not really a guitar, it’s his own instrument. He has made his own instrument. We’re the guitar and no one of us can figure out what the hell he’s doing. I listen to that and just shake my head. I don’t know. Hendrix and Jimmy Page are amazing.”
