Joe Perry Compares Aerosmith And KISS To Pick The Best Rock Band

Joe Perry recently joined a conversation with Classic Rock and shared his thoughts on whether Aerosmith or KISS is the greatest rock and roll band in the United States.

When asked to compare his own band and KISS to pick the best rock and roll band, the guitarist recalled his experience watching them for the first time, saying:

“[Laughing] Oh, I don’t know, man. KISS took performance art to the next level. I remember seeing them for the first time, and I was just f*cking blown away. Those guys were the best. We were fretting about not making a mistake, and they didn’t give a sh*t; they just put it out there.”

He went on, adding his admiration for KISS’ stage presence and how they differ from Aerosmith:

“Those guys were killing it. I saw their show and thought: ‘What the f*ck do we have to do?’ I love KISS. KISS and Aerosmith, we’re two different entities.”

Back in 2012, in an interview with The Cowhead Show on WHPT Tampa, Perry again reflected on the different qualities of Aerosmith and KISS in a similar way, stating:

“It’s two different animals. [KISS] went the theatrical way and used rock ‘n’ roll kind of as their soundtrack. For Aerosmith, the music is our show. It’s apples and oranges.”

During the 1970s, Aerosmith occasionally performed as the opening act for KISS, and in 2003, the two bands embarked on a co-headline tour, referred to by KISS as the World Domination Tour and by Aerosmith as the Rocksimus Maximus Tour.
