Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Feared Being Perceived As A Stalker

To fall in love with someone and make an effort to be with them is a joyful process, although it also involves some anxiety. It feels good to show your love for someone, but what about the fear of being rejected or, worse, misunderstood? Might this prevent us from meeting the one we were meant to be with?

Some people could consider the fear of falling in love as a barrier. Even if it is, the obstacles standing in the way of their love are negligible for famous musicians from the rock world like Eric Clapton. Despite everything, he made an effort to attract the woman he loved and eventually succeeded.

Not every rock artist has a love story as eventful as theirs, though. Those like Green Day’s lead vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong have relationships that started rather calmly with small worries, which did not stop him from pursuing his love. Still, his worries are worth mentioning because they have beautiful stories attached to them.

Armstrong met his wife, Adrienne Nesser, years ago during their first tour as a band. After two failed relationships, the vocalist got enamored with her, falling in love for the third and, unbeknownst to him, the last time. His feelings were not exactly unrequited, as he and Adrienne kept in contact. The start of their relationship included a lot of letter pages and hefty phone bills.

During those days, the band had to go to Minnesota, where Adrienne lived at the time, to have a few small shows, and understandably, they were not exactly happy with it. But there was one thing they didn’t know: Their vocalist was there to see his love. Yes, Armstrong went all the way to Minnesota to see Adrienne and used his band as coverage.

Of course, his strong feelings were reflected in his artistic abilities and gave birth to ‘2000 Light Years Away,’ the first song he ever wrote for Adrienne. He recorded and sent the song to her. Although receiving a song written about yourself can be one of the sweetest gestures from a loved one, Armstrong was nervous about it because he did not want to be perceived as a stalker’ by Adrienne.

Luckily, what he feared did not happen, and their relationship continued to thrive for the upcoming years. They got married, had kids, and are still happily married to this day. The musician recalls the past times as sweet memories now, as seen in his 2020 interview with Rolling Stone.

Armstrong shared his memory of the first song he wrote for his wife:

“The first tour that Green Day ever went on, I met my wife, Adrienne, at a house party in Minneapolis. She asked for an address because we had run out of our vinyl. Then we started corresponding and kind of became pen pals and having these long talks, running up phone bills.

Then Green Day booked this mini-tour. We drove from California all the way out to Minnesota. Nobody really knew why we were driving all the way to Wisconsin and Minnesota to just play, like, four shows, but I was really just going back to see her. On the way back, I wrote ‘2000 Light Years Away.’ The song just wrote itself.

I put it down on an acoustic guitar and sent her a cassette of it. When you write a song for a person that you’re falling for, you don’t know what the response is going to be. The last thing you want is for someone to go, ‘Oh, you’re a stalker!’ But it’s been a staple in our set ever since, and it led into many, many, many songs I’ve been writing about her for the next almost 30 years.”

At the end of the day, it is quite normal to feel a bit of anxiety when it comes to love. Losing your chance with someone you love due to a misunderstanding can be really unpleasant. Fortunately, in the case of Billie Joe Armstrong and Adrienne Nesser, fears were in vain. Their lasting relationship is proof of that.
