Eric Clapton’s ‘Weakness’ About His Love Life

Besides their musical endeavors, the artists’ love lives are also a subject of great curiosity for the media and avid music fans. Although they are more talented and successful than many in the music industry, they often struggle with similar relationship issues as everyone else.

As a famous musician, Eric Clapton’s personal life has also been under the press’ close scrutiny. While many of the legendary guitarist’s relationships have been covered by the media, his most famous love affair was probably the love triangle he was involved in featuring the Beatles’ late guitarist George Harrison and his wife Pattie Boyd, whom Clapton married later on.

Many interesting stories are swirling around about how the guitarist convinced Boyd to start a relationship with him, including a guitar duel between Clapton and Harrison. You may think Eric Clapton has been as lucky in his love life as in his career, but there was an issue where the guitarist considered himself weak.

What Did Eric Clapton Say About His Love Life?

Besides Pattie Boyd, with whom Eric Clapton was married between 1979 and 1989, the musician’s affairs with singer Betty Davis, manager Yvonne Kelly, model Lory Del Santo, and administrative assistant Melia McEnery also went public in the past. The guitarist has been with McEnery since the early 2000s, and the couple has three daughters.

In an interview with Rolling Stone back in 1991, the subject of his love life somehow came up while discussing his relationship with the press. Eric Clapton stated that the journalists were very interested in his personal life and wanted him to marry someone. So, whenever they saw a woman next to him, they felt glad for him for eventually finding happiness.

The guitarist said that was a lovely approach, but he was not looking for a long-term relationship back then. He revealed that he just loved hanging out with beautiful women but not being involved in a serious relationship, which he described as a weakness in his love life. Clapton highlighted that it was normal for the press to focus on him because he was a famous and prosperous musician.

Eric Clapton’s words on his weakness in his love life:

“But I think these journalists probably feel sorry for me. They’re trying to marry me off. If they see me with a girl, they think, ‘Ah, Eric finds happiness.’ There’s a side of it that is very sweet. And I kind of feel touched by it because I’m not really sure that I’m looking for comfort or a steady relationship. I just like the company of beautiful women. I have a weakness in that department. And I suppose because I am fairly well off and a famous musician, I’m up for grabs. And that makes me an eligible bachelor in the press.”

Apparently, that was how Clapton felt for a long time, and he had an active love life for years until he met Melia McEnery in 1998. Then, the guitarist started a steady relationship that has lasted for over two decades.
