Billy Corgan Reveals Who Controls Smashing Pumpkins

Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins recently got interviewed by Toronto Sun, originally about wrestling. While talking about his interest in wrestling, Corgan gave some examples about the band and what he has been going through. He complained:

“Like a musician in popular culture, there’s always a sense that the thing can kind of end long before you’re ready to call it quits because of a disinterested public or somebody else with their hands on the lever of something.”

Having been around with the band for more than 30 years, he clarifies who controls the band. He told:

“Just yesterday I was in the conversation about a past Smashing Pumpkins release that we’re trying to get put out. Normally the way we operate these days is I have total control of everything that goes on with the band, meaning our releases, our scheduling, everything.”

Apparently, things don’t always work out the way Corgan wants. He explains further:

“Yet here I am, still negotiating with something from my past and with somebody in an office who I don’t know, who probably doesn’t even really care about what the band has or hasn’t accomplished. You know, you’re still navigating something that’s forces beyond your control.”

While he appears to be fed up and tired of what has happened to him and the band, an interview happened at March reveals that this might not be the truth. Considering the variability of the music and the audience, he comments:

“[…] Most people don’t know what the records are really about. They’re focused on their favorite song or their favorite drum solo or whatever. It’s totally fine. The last 20-something years of social media have taught me to respect the fact that everybody has their own level of engagement, and any engagement is good. So if somebody likes a song, great. If somebody wants to know every guitar pedal and what these lyrics mean and stuff, that’s great, too. It doesn’t bother me at all.[…]”

Making music since 1988, the band released their 12th studio album, ‘Atum’, on 31st January. You can listen to the album here.
